Andy Warhol
Marilyn Announcement – Castelli Graphics is a rare promotional poster created by Pop Art pioneer Andy Warhol to publicise the 1962 exhibition of his iconic Marilyn works at Castelli Gallery in New York. Produced shortly after the death of Marilyn Monroe, the announcement reflects Warhol’s emerging fascination with celebrity culture, mass media, and the repetition of images in modern society.
The design features Warhol’s now-famous stylized portrait of Monroe—derived from a publicity photograph from the film Niagara - rendered in bold colour blocks and graphic contrast. By transforming a Hollywood publicity image into a repeated, screen-printed icon, Warhol elevated Monroe’s likeness into a symbol of fame, glamour, and the commodification of celebrity.
Created as an exhibition announcement for the groundbreaking show at the Castelli Gallery, the piece marks an early moment in Warhol’s shift from commercial illustration to fine art. Today, Marilyn Announcement - Castelli Graphics is valued not only as a collectible print but also as an important document of Pop Art history, capturing the moment when Warhol began redefining the relationship between popular culture and contemporary art.
